Social media and internet commentators tend to overreact for the sake of laughs, and that reached a peak with the first Sonic the Hedgehog film trailer. With bizarre proportions and unsettling visual elements, the new look of the beloved hedgehog was not taken too kindly. While the film’s director promised a character redesign, which will undoubtedly put more unnecessary stress and workload on the film’s animators, an apparently official kid’s costume for the film will double down on the design.
As listed on Amazon, the “deluxe” costume comes from Rubie’s Costume Company, which has made a number of licensed costumes for numerous properties. A quick scan through their website will show costumes based off of movie properties, Marvel, DC, other video games like the Super Mario series, and even the Sonic the Hedgehog game series. At least those ones look slightly more sensible, I guess. It’s really hard to go right with any sort of Sonic costume if we’re being honest.
If any aspiring parents are looking for a way to be completely irresponsible for their children, putting them into this costume, which Amazon lists as $44.99, is a starter. Any child’s face would be less creepy than the one we’re getting from the official movie, but those kids will still be running around as a weird, naked, furry animal/alien. We have the biggest mockery currently making the rounds, so imagine dressing up like it.
Of course, in the end, we’re all mostly just kidding. The fact that millions of dollars could be spent to “fix” a movie that not a lot of people have any faith in from the get-go seems like an overreaction. It doesn’t seem helpful that one of the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog seems to be fully on board with the announced redesign, but I suppose that entertainment executives believe that “the customer is always right” extends to their own field.
As we await this certain mess of a movie, you can read some thoughts from our staff who are still excited to watch it. Sonic the Hedgehog releases on November 8, not long after Halloween. Did you hear about this awesome costume based on the movie, by the way?
