It’s been a minute since gamers have had a quality skateboarding game to enjoy. Skate 3 released in 2010 and, outside of the OlliOlli series, the genre hasn’t had anything to play worth your time. That might all be changing with Crea-ture Studios upcoming release of Session. The game was successfully Kickstarted in 2017 and made a splashy appearance at Microsoft’s E3 conference in 2018. Today, the developers have dropped a brand-new trailer to announce the game is coming to early access next month.
Session skews much closer to the realistic side of video game skateboarding. Fans of the Skate series will likely feel much more at home than players who enjoy the more arcadey skating seen in the Tony Hawk franchise. The devs are claiming that this will be the “most authentic and grounded” skateboarding sim you can play. You’ll need to put some work in to pull off some of the more wild tricks in the game.
I grew up with the Tony Hawk games and never really played much Skate. That said, I can’t wait to see how Session does. The skateboarding scene is begging for someone to release a good game, with Skate 4 rumors seemingly cropping up every year at E3. If Session can capture that buzz and put out a quality product, they’ll have a major success on their hands. If that turns into more skating games, everybody wins.
Session is coming to early access on PC on September 17. It will then come to the Xbox Game Preview program in October.
